These Are a Few of My Favorite Things, 10/30/15

Happy Halloween tomorrow! Or as I prefer to refer to it, Happy Birthday Week to me! I turned 38 a couple of days ago, so the chocolate cake and champagne don’t count against my diet this week. It’s in the rules.

This is hands down my favorite time of year, and here’s why:

  1. My birthday. Duh.
  2. The gorgeous fall colors, especially now that we’re back in Michigan, land of deciduous trees.
  3. Halloween.
  4. Sweater weather.

I put the sweater thing at the bottom, but it still counts. It’s nice bringing out the cozies, you know? Lighting the fire a bit, wrapping up. Soup. I don’t need to go much further than that and include snow and boots and all, that’s a whole different beast. But fall is just the right amount of cool air and beautiful surroundings. So before we get to my favorite things to have found around the web this week, here a few pictures of my favorite things. Two of my favorite things, in particular.

Madeline and Gnome, Literary Halloween costumes

Costumes based on books, I love these kids.

Oof, this is a terrible blurry picture that I took with my phone (I’ll try to get a better one tomorrow when they actually go out trick or treating and I’ll replace it here), but here are my kids heading out to their school Halloween party this morning! Elsie as Madeline (she even let me cut her hair! That’s dedication!), and Toby as a gnome. He’s totally obsessed with this book lately- he’s specifically a woodland gnome, and likely over 200 years old. And as Elsie was leaving this morning, she said “Mom? I don’t really have to say ‘Pooh pooh,’ do I? Because my teacher says we can’t say things like that….only in the bathroom…”

The Light! Be Still My Heart!

So even with all this beauty around me, there’s even one more thing to share! And it’s very very good news! I got a job! I’ll be working part time at our library serving as the interim manager, which I’m thrilled about. I get to really be a part of making this community dynamic, I’m around books all day, and I still don’t miss a moment at home with the family. Win win win.

NOW- onto the things around the net that are keeping me glued to this computer lately…

Speaking of Sweater Weather…I love you, CBC.

A particularly timely piece called “Before Google, There Was the Patient, Long-Suffering Staff of the New York Public Library.” I have a hard time thinking back to what we did before we had every bit of information at our fingertips at all times. How did we ever watch movies without going to IMDB and figuring out where we’d seen that actor before? Did we really just drop off disputes or quandaries with “Huh…I dunno,” and shrug our shoulders? Anyhow, #letmelibrarianthatforyou is pretty much the best hashtag ever.

What I’m listening to on right now: Fates and Furies, by Lauren Groff. The first half of the book is the story of a life and marriage from the husband’s point of view. The second half is from the wife’s. They’re different. I expected them to be different of course, I was thinking a difference in perspective, perhaps some secrets. Uh…she had a totally different take on things. Yes, I’m enjoying it- read it. Or listen to it.

These guys. Particularly the guy in the back, he’s like the Meg Griffin of the group.

Have fun tomorrow, everyone!

  1. Oh this is so fabulous, where do I START? The costumes on the kids….BRILLIANT, so much love. I think my J would LOVE that book, I forgot about it! I think I had it when I was little! Your scenery shots, oh my GAH. Is that seriously where you live?? You live in a postcard, girlfriend! That last tree in the sunset, WHAT?! that’s bonkerville insane crazy beautiful!

Huge congrats on the library job! If I could go back in time, I’d go to library school. I can’t think of a better place to be! So thrilled for you. And yes. winter can be too much, but fall really is JUST RIGHT. xoxoxoxo

    • Just wait a minute. Are you saying Julia has NEVER read the Gnome Book????!!! But it’s right up her alley! Go get it for her, crazy woman, she must have it. You probably have your original copy somewhere, or maybe your dad does. Mine did. But he also got us the updated version, which is crazy beautiful.

And yes, that’s the back part of our property. Kind of crazy, huh? Those are the woods I grew up playing in. My son kept saying “Mom, I want to show you these trees down here…” and I kept saying, “Tobes. I know what you’re talking about. I’ve been there…had a fort there…OK. Show me. I’m following you.”

Can’t believe I’m a librarian, it’s kind of a dream come true for the book nerd in me. I am LOVING it.

      Fall’s like baby bear, really.
