These Are a Few of My Favorite Things, 5/4/15

I decided I’m going to add a new category to my blog, I’m beginning the week with a round up of sorts- interesting articles, videos, links and the like, sometimes book related sometimes not. It’s a bit of a departure from my typical book posts with occasional 10 Favorites lists, so let me know (kindly if at all possible) if you prefer just the book profiles or if this is OK. I was compiling a list of my responsibilities as an author’s assistant (something I’ve been doing for five years now, wow!) the other day, trying to focus on the things I loved most about my job and at the top of my list was “compiling lists.” For work usually those are lists of potential publications, to-do lists, email lists, brainstorming ideas etc, but for my purposes here they’re going to be solely interesting stuff I want to share, spreading that cyber love.

But first I want to share these pictures- I think spring has finally hit here so I can breathe a sigh of relief and venture outside again in shoes not boots. The kids and I rode bikes over to my dad’s house the other day and we decided we’d go for a walk through the woods- so what does my dad do? He brings out Pony Boy to join us.

Don’t mind us, just taking the pony for a walk through the woods…

So onto my favorite things…

  • I’m in my last week of a Coursera linguistics MOOC- a massive open online course. All these universities worldwide offer free online classes via weekly lectures and readings. They’re not for credit or anything, just for personal knowledge- I tell you, it’s been fascinating! My class was through the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and my professor been so engaging and fun to listen to! There are courses in all different subjects via University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Nanjing University, University of Copenhagen and tons more, in all sorts of languages.
  • It’s no secret that Anne of Green Gables is pretty much the best book ever. My 7 year old finished the abridged version this spring, I can’t wait to find one of these beauties for when it comes time to read the whole thing!
  • And this just made me smile.

Have a wonderful week, and please let me know in the comments if you like this new category!
