I realized today as I was picking up in the kids’ loft that there was a pile of board books in the corner that had mostly stayed put during their latest free-for-all up there. My six-year-old son was trying to shelve a mess of library books strewn on the floor, and my three-year-old daughter was (in true three-year-old fashion) picking up and putting down everything that her brother had just touched. Then she climbed onto her bed, distracted by the picture book Adéle and Simon and the fact that it pictures twelve little girls in two straight lines seemingly headed by Miss Clavel walking through a Parisian park.
I fear we’re heading away from board book territory. We’ve had a nice long run of toddlerhood and gnawed, wet cardboard page corners. But now that I can reasonably expect my youngest to turn a paper page without ripping it or drooling on it, I thought I’d share some of our favorites before I begin to box them up.
I realize that I got a little caught up and went over my typical 10 Favorites in this list- I meant to just include one of the Baby Lit primers, the fantastic series that turns classic literature into introductory counting and color books but I couldn’t stop myself (and ended up cutting another favorite, Sandra Boynton’s Blue Hat Green Hat in the process). The Pantone book of colors is a bright and modern intro to various color shades, one I don’t mind looking at myself. Jamberry is a rhyming favorite that neither of my children could get enough of (in fact, I’ve always intoned it exactly the same way from start to finish and that’s how the kids read it now, too). Eric Carle’s From Head to Toe is an engaging and interactive book that gets kids bending and balancing their bodies like various animals. The Swing is a Robert Lewis Stevenson poem set to beautiful illustrations. I’ll miss these when they go, but I suppose it’s a natural progression.
Here are the 12, with links to my Amazon affiliate store if you’re so inclined.
