I know I’m a bit late for the party with back to school books (Happy Columbus Day everybody!), but I’ve compiled a list of some great ones. I find Kevin Henkes’ books, in particular, to be both relatable and sweet, and both of my kids love everything Pete the Cat does. Coincidentally, our dear cat’s name is also Pete the Cat, but he is 10 and decidedly less groovy. My favorite on the list is Follow The Line to School, which is so inventive!
Do you have any great school books to add to the list?
- Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, by Kevin Henkes
- Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes, by Eric Litwin
- Bailey, by Harry Bliss
- Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes
- The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn
- Follow the Line to School, by Laura Ljungkvist
- Wemberly Worried, by Kevin Henkes
- Countdown to Kindergarten, by Alison McGhee
- How I Spent My Summer Vacation, by Mark Teague
- I Am Too Absolutely Small for School, by Lauren Child
A new favorite for us (for the around 2nd-4th grade crowd) at Child’s Play was The World According to Humphrey series by Betty G Birney (I’ve only honestly read 2 of them) about a classroom hamster who takes turns traveling home for the weekend with different children and learns about how different they all are and how to be a good friend in each case.
